Business Continuity and Contingency Planning Module 1
OVERVIEW:
The BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management have joined to deliver a three-part 90-minute Webinar series on Business Continuity Planning in the COVID-19 environment.
Installments will be held from May 27 to June 25, 2020:
- Module I May 27
- Module II June 11
- Module III June 25
Business Continuity Management (BCM) is more than just 'disaster recovery'. It is about the prevention of loss and preparing for disruptive incidents that may cripple an organisation's functionality, or even cause operational ruining. The most common effects of disruptions are staff being unable to report to work due to travel difficulties and closures in school/childcare causing cancellation of business meetings. More importantly, a Business Continuity Plan can help all businesses when faced with any kind of organisation disruption.
This practical continuity planning workshop provides a comprehensive overview and understanding of the business continuity process through practical tools and techniques for businesses to examine areas that will affect operation. The main objectives of this Webinar series are to aid participants in:
- Identifying the key components of the contingency planning process;
- Understanding the importance of continuity planning for businesses and the local hazard environment;
- Utilizing continuity planning tools to develop tailored Business Continuity Plans
- Addressing how to use tools to prepare for, respond to and recovery from emergencies in the workplace
The Modules
Module I – Offers an overview discussion on Business Continuity Management Planning for Business Resilience and Sustainability.
Module II - Provides an in-depth look at the tools associated with planning for Business Continuity and Resilience. These tools are the
- Readiness Assessment Survey which provides users with a ballpark assessment of their state of readiness for the Atlantic Hurricane Season.
- Vulnerability Assessment Tool is a useful tool to help businesses identify and further consider a rang or probable and possible threats that present a risk to the organization. From that range of threats, likely scenarios can be developed and appropriate strategies applied.
- Determining Essential Resources Form helps users to identify the essential resources, both human and equipment, services and functions that are required for the organization to continue its operations and withstand negative impacts.
- Business Impact Analysis which serves to determine and evaluate the potential effects of an interruption to critical business operations as a result of a disaster, accident or emergency
- Contingency /Continuity Plan Template is a guiding document that is intended to be used as a tool for assisting organizations to develop their contingency/continuity/recovery plans. It offers a range of options that are intended to generate discussions among the planning team, which ultimately determines what elements remain or should be removed based on the nature of the business.
Module III – Offers an overview discussion on Incident/Crisis Management and areas of consideration for Business Resiliency and Sustainability.
PURPOSE OF WEBINAR:
This training will introduce participants to business continuity (BC) and then leads participants through the business continuity planning road-map with detailed steps for implementing business continuity management for their organizations.
The road-map will demonstrate how to assess and gather business continuity requirements for managing any hazard impact; developing business continuity strategies based on requirements and solutions; testing and implementing the business continuity solutions; maintaining BC plans; executing BC plans in the event of a disaster, and managing normalization of business operations.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This Webinar is designed for executives, managers, and planners that are involved in, manage or are responsible for developing Business Continuity Plans/Disaster Recovery Plans or managing the Continuity of Operations and Contingency Planning elements of their organization.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
The main objective of the Webinar is to enhance participants’ understanding of the importance of continuity planning by:
- Introducing participants to the tenets of continuity of operations and contingency planning,
- Identifying the key components of the contingency planning process, and
- Increasing understanding of the overall Business Continuity Management life-cycle, the benefits and requirements.
MEET THE PRESENTERS - Dr. Evangeline Inniss Springer:
Dr. Evan Inniss-Springer is a Certified Emergency Manager and Certified Continuity Manager who has over 25 years of experience in the disaster risk management field, having worked at the regional level with CDERA/CDEMA, internationally with PAHO, and nationally in the BVI. She currently serves as the Acting Director with the Department of Disaster Management in the BVI. In this capacity, she manages the Department and monitors the translation of the hazard science into action with a focus on influencing behavioural change at the community level while integrating comprehensive disaster management as a way of life for our residents.
Dr. Inniss-Springer holds a Masters in Health Studies from the University of Alabama, a Doctor of Health Sciences with a focus on Leadership and Organisational Behaviour from A.T. Still University, as well as professional designations in emergency management from International Association of Emergency Management and continuity managing from the Institute for Business Continuity Training.
MEET THE PRESENTERS – Sheniah Armstrong:
Sheniah Armstrong is a disaster risk management specialist with experience working in broad emergency operations and management principles for disaster contingency and business resiliency. She has over 15 years of experience in the field of emergency management. Sheniah currently serves as the Planning and Preparedness Manager and as one of the Acting Deputy Director at the Department of Disaster Management. She has shared responsibility for the administration and maintenance of the Virgin Islands Disaster Management Programme.
Sheniah concurrently earned her Associates in General Business Management and Bachelors in Behavioural Science degrees from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. She has also attained professional development in other areas including a certification in International Disaster Management for Humanitarian Relief, Disaster Response and Recovery; diplomas in Strategic Policy Planning for Governments and Disaster Risk Reduction Leadership; as well as professional designations as a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM©) and a Certified Continuity Manager (CCM©) from the International Association of Emergency Management and the Institute for Business Continuity Training respectively.
